Queens Theatre (QT) presents ArtsPower's THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD EARNS HER WHISTLE. Adapted for the stage by playwright and lyricist Greg Gunning and composer Richard DeRosa, it's a story about finding strength from within and always believing that anything is possible, a theme that can always be found in these beloved books. It's hard to believe, but Stages Musical Theatre Festival will be almost twenty years old this year. This biennial musical theatre event returns to Los Angeles the weekend of August 23-25. Featuring eight new musicals presented in concert readings, the festival will be hosted by the New Musicals Initiative (the professional wing of the Academy for New Musical Theatre) and will be presented in two locations: the Lonny Chapman Theatre (10900 Burbank Blvd in North Hollywood) and the Academy, 5628 Vineland in North Hollywood.

The parade seen is terrifically stages with marching bands, entertaining acts and the famous Macy's balloons all depicted while Music Director Richard DeRosa and his five-man band play a score by Meredith "Music Man" Wilson that includes "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas." Alexander Butler as Mara's grandson is adorable as is Grace Rundhaug, who believes in Santa when Kris is able to speak to her in her native Dutch. The real Macy's over at Waterbury's Brass Mill Mall also got involved in the production, decorating the theater lobby and providing discount cards in the program.

The poetry of William Shakespeare's timeless A Midsummer Night's Dream is swinging to a new beat with newly composed tunes, classic jazz standards and choreographed dance numbers in A Jazz Dream, The Musical, adapted by New York guest director Maggie L. Harrer and produced by the University of North Texas Department of Dance and Theatre. UNT's College of Music is providing creative musical input, and UNT's Department of English is offering dramaturgical assistance.

The young Metropolitan Opera soprano Monica Yunus, who will be featured in the Met production of Rossini's Le Comte D'Ory next season, will be the soprano soloist in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana at the 2011 Usdan Center Gala Concert on Long Island on Wednesday August 3.
